St. Beuno, Clynnog Fawr

The ancient and beautiful church of St. Beuno at Clynnog Fawr was something of a sleeper on the tour. We were greeted by a dear old thing who was barely able to read her prepared notes about the church. However, once we were in the nave and invited to make music, it was great fun. The church was very spare in its decoration, but the small organ and splendid acoustics were very inviting. We sang hymns, anthems and a cappella numbers, all without any music to hand.

An impromptu hymn-sing!

The girls were permitted to go up to the gallery on the chancel screen, from which perch they sang their trademark Palestrina round, "Jubilate deo."

Though small, this organ produced a vigorous, warm and pleasing tone, well adapted for leading hymns.
