For reasons that I don't really understand, I have swimming on March 17,
1999.
I am going to keep a record of my progress here.
I realize that these distances and times are pathetic in terms
of real swimmers. I haven't really swam in at leat 20 years.
Hey give a poor 40 something. a break, OK? Besides, these distances and
times are already improving. That's the point, I think.
I would like to make it to a reasonable 1600-2000 yds/hr
by the end of spring quarter.

A long time, but decent mileage. Much of the free
was semi-drills. The 13x100 was done in zoomers
(with some exceptions). I realized that my breathing
is on e of the things that is screwing up my freestyle form.
In fact I glide quite nicely now on my non-breathing
side. (This is a dramatic improvement over a week or
two ago.). Keep head down. I start to sink, panic, then
start the next stroke way to early .
- April 16, 1999, 7:05 am, 15-20 minutes. I comming down
with a cold. This was cut short. 600 yds.

The last 2 50s were done with webbed gloves. (Yes I know
webbed gloves are stupud. I agree. But paddles are illegal in
rec swim here. That is a stupid rule, BTW. ) Some of the front 25s
of the 50s were done is bilateral breathing or breath every 4 or
6th stroke.
Tomorrow some 150s! I hope.
Back again. Swam for about 30-40 min in the afternoon. 750 yds.

Sets 2 and 4 (of the 5) were done with zoomers. Zoom, Zoom
Zoom. This is fun. Of course, the choice was bk k.
Much of the freestyle was done with attention to two things:
1) frond quadrant timing. and 2) High elbow arm stoke.
- April 12, 43 minutes. 1100 yards. Absolutely none of the
50 free's were broken. Good to be back in the four figure yardage.

I am very happy with this, and this is kinda a milestone. Look
back in March. I could not do more thatn 25 yds of freestyle at a time.
After goind 2x25 free, I would have to do -- huffing and puffing and
completly out of breath -- a 50 of back or breast. (See comments on March 17)
All of the 50s were unbroken. Some were (for me) quite hepoxic --
breath every 4th or 6th stroke. I even did a few of the front 25s
as alernate breathing. Now -- how much tomorrow????

Alleluia! This is a 25 Meter course. (Or 50 meters, if they
redid the setup).

free stroke, adding at least 100 meters a WO. Also at least
one longer swim should be added. Tomorrow a 1x100.
Tu or Wed a 1x150, etc., In no time I'll be doing a 1x500.
- April 9 45 Min. 1000 yds. Despite the low yardage and high time,
this was a success. All of a suddent at about 900 yds I had wind and
speed and lots of energy. But then it was time to go to class. :-)

Comments: Freestyle is getting better. Need more work on form. This

- April 3: Mostly breaststroke. Did some timing. In that
following the breast stoke is hard, but not sprint --
I think that my form (such as it is) would fall apart
with sprints. The back stroke is more or less
active rest. 900 yds 35-40 min.

Comments: Some times breast stroke 50 yd times: :55, 1:02.
Not bad (for me). I realize that these times are pathetic, but...
a) I wasn't sprinting, and b) a bad time here is a good thing,
as it gives copious room for improvement. So there.
Note that these times include a crappy turn.
The muscles that get sore for breastroke seem to be
the brachialis, various forearm muscles, and the abs. Of course lats and
bi's are used but they weren't sore.
- April 2: Mostly a technique day.Lots of time working on
breast stoke form. It's all changed since I was age group.

Comments: This was refreshing. I could have swam another 200-300
meters easy. This is becoming a pattern. A day where swimming is really hard,
and I want to puke after finishing, followed by a day where
it all seems refeshing.
About freestyle form: I am trying to learn and practive front quadrant
swimming. It feels awkward, and I can't yet do it unless I
devote almost all of my attention to it. (Thus forgetting
about hip thrust, balance, etc.,.etc., etc., ) But -- it is
absolutely amazing -- a faster an easier freestyle, even though
I don't have it all put together yet. I must spend more time
on free style form.

Comments: Long course is different. I was disappointed in
my yardage, 'till I realized that it was nearly 1100 yards. Wow,
all this week, the pool is set up long course. My intention
was to go on longer, but the freestyle sprint was a killer.

Actually the times for the "3x100"s were probably close to what they
were yesterday. The kicks, and cool down added considerable time.
OTOH, I actually felt refreshed after swimming. The last 2x50
easy swims were actually quite pleasant.
Note the careful construction, with lots of backstroke, so I can
catch my breath. Rests were 30-60 seconds, and were probably
less than yesterday.

Comments: This workout was unpleasant. I thought I would die, towards the end.
I had originally intended to have a cool down, but I had great difficulty
completing the free portion of the IM.
The great quantity of back and breast is because I
was gasping for air. I am not entirely displeased with the speed,
but the endurance is pitiful. Fly needs to be worked on, especially the
kick. I also need a great deal of work on turns.
